The oldest way to make tourism is surely by moving thousands of people towards sacred places. People used to go on foot and walk through eternal roads and very difficult ones too, hoping to find faith, or the recovery of a dear person or of oneself. The common prayer used to give strength to people.

In the heart of Italy, there is a region, an enchanting land, full of colours, savours, memories, suggestions, a whole place to discover, “the country of the sweet dunes’ (Cecco D’Ascoli), “ Italy in one region” (G.Piovene), covered with “ wide paths, eternal silence and profound tranquillity” (G.Leopardi), with an unforgettable fascination. This region is still profoundly linked to the exalting spiritual experience and adventure of San Francesco d’Assisi. The Benedictan world had already invaded this land, since the origins and then, after some reforms dating from the XI-XII centuries, arisen from the spirit of father S.Benedetto, finding a fertile land in the open valleys and in the silence of the solitary mounts: Camaldolesi, Cistercensi, Silvestrini, have their abbeys, monasteries, and hermits of high importance. The Marche peculiarly soaked in this spiritual adventure, the figure and the spirit of San Francesco d’Assisi, due to the geographical vicinity with Umbria, to the affinity and mostly because the Marche hosted him since the beginning. In fact, in the “Marca di Ancona”, Francesco made his first “missionary” trip, like a herald and a minstrel of God, to communicate in an absolute new and original way, and to show the happiness of the Gospel. The joy of showing a new way to witness faith, along with brother Egidio, when the followers of “poverello” were only three. It was the year 1208, the year of our Lord. |
